A unique souvenir of a vanished area of London, featuring my own photos of local street signs. Guests on my monthly walking tour of the old Chinatown get a free magnet, but you can order one here.
London's first Chinatown flourished in the Docklands areas of Limehouse and Poplar from approximately 1880 when Chinese sailors began to lodge in the area. Some Chinese sailors stayed and started families, and by the 1920s there was a distinctly Chinese enclave in the East End of London. The area never really recovered from World War II bombing and evacuation, and most of the area was redeveloped in the 1960s.
The street names Canton Street, Amoy Place and Chusan Place pre-dated the Chinese community, referencing long-standing trade between London and China, but Ming Street was renamed in WW2 to acknowledge the Chinese community.
